Why finding the right league matters
Roller derby is a team sport first: nearly everything about it happens through a league. Leagues run beginner programs (often called “fresh meat”), organize practices, and field teams for bouts. Joining one is how you learn to skate, learn the game, and find your derby family. If you are still deciding whether the sport is for you, our beginners guide is a good starting point.
What kinds of leagues exist?
Most leagues affiliate with a governing body, which shapes their rules and competitive calendar:
- WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) — the largest international body for flat-track derby.
- MRDA (Men’s Roller Derby Association) — the men’s equivalent.
- JRDA (Junior Roller Derby Association) — for skaters under 18. See our guide to roller derby for kids.
- Independent and banked-track leagues — many run on WFTDA-style rules without formal membership.
Where to search
Start with directories that list leagues by location:
- Our Roller Derby Leagues Directory
- Our Roller Derby by City pages
- WFTDA’s own league listings
- A simple search for “roller derby near [your city]” — most leagues have active Instagram or Facebook pages with recruitment posts.
Derby is global: leagues exist across Canada, the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Latin America, so most mid-size cities have at least one within driving distance.
What to expect at your first practice
Beginner programs typically run 8–12 weeks and cover falls, stops, footwork, and basic blocking before any contact. You will need your own protective gear; some leagues loan skates for the first few sessions. Expect sore legs, a supportive crowd, and skills tests at the end of the program.
You do not have to skate to join
Leagues need referees, non-skating officials, scorekeepers, medics, photographers, and event volunteers. Officiating is a great way to learn the game — and many leagues will train you from zero.
Questions to ask before joining
- What governing body and ruleset does the league play under?
- When does the next fresh-meat intake start, and what gear do I need on day one?
- What are dues, and how many practices per week are expected?
- Is the league skater-owned or nonprofit?
