This is one of the biggest roller derby myths. There are many roles on and off skates in roller derby. Our referees and non skating officials are essential to ensure our games are played safely and fairly (or at all). Extensive game knowledge is not required to get started, leagues provide training and opportunities. To get practical experience all you need is a willingness to learn! We always need refs and NCOs !
I NEED TO BE A GYM JUNKIE THAT WORKS OUT 7 DAYS A WEEK
While we recommend incorporating some strength training to help with balance, endurance, and Injury prevention, there is no need to live at the gym (if that is not your thing).
Size Related Roller Derby Myths: I’M TOO OLD / SMALL / CLUMSY TO DERBY
Another of the very common Roller Derby myths. The roles and spcialties in Roller Derby allow for sjaters to excel whethe theitr skill set is powering through or nimbly dodging around. We have members of every shape and size skating With us; ranging from their late teens to their 40s. Roller derby is for all ages and all bodies! Falling is a normal part of roller derby. We’ll teach you how todo that safely too.
I’LL GET HIT ON MY FIRST DAY OF TRAINING
A minor one of the Roller Derby myths, but unbderstandable. Roller derby is a full-contact sport, but no one’s going to throw you in the deep end! Freshie programs work on fundamental skills first, before easing you into contact. The truth is, we wouldn’t retain a lot of first timers if we beat them into the sport. Roller derby (despite the physicallity) is a very caring and nuturing sport. No one want sto see you hurt. There aare some great learning resources on the WFTDA site
I NEED TO BE AN EXPERIENCED SKATER TO PLAY ROLLER DERBY
Many skaters were new to skates before joining their roller derby teams. As long as you can stand comfortably by yourself on skates all you need is patience and commitment and your team can help with the rest
